Read This Before Comparing Rates
We want you to make the best decision for sending money home. That means understanding exactly what our rates mean and how they work. This page explains the ins and outs so you're never surprised.
Our Rates Are Estimates, Not Guarantees
Every rate you see on BantayPadala is an ESTIMATE. This means:
- It's our best calculation based on current market data and provider information.
- It may NOT match the exact rate you receive when you actually send money.
- Factors like your payment method, the amount you're sending, and your location can affect the actual rate you get.
How We Get Our Rate Data
Our rates come from two sources:
- Exchange Rate API: We pull mid-market exchange rates (the base rate with no markup) from ExchangeRate-API. This is the real-world rate you see in the news.
- Provider Markups: Each remittance provider adds their own markup on top of the mid-market rate. We manually verify these markups regularly, but providers can change them anytime without telling us.
We verify our data regularly, but the remittance market moves fast. A rate that was accurate this morning might be outdated by afternoon.
Rates Change Throughout the Day
Exchange rates are constantly moving. The Philippine Peso strengthens and weakens minute by minute based on global market activity.
When you see a rate on BantayPadala, that's the rate at the moment we loaded the data. By the time you click through to a provider, rates may have shifted. By the time you send money, they may have shifted again.
This is normal. It's how global currency markets work. Just verify the final rate with your provider before you confirm the transfer.
Provider Fees and Markups Matter Too
The exchange rate is only part of what you'll actually receive. Each provider also charges:
- Fixed fees — a flat amount per transfer (e.g., $3.99)
- Percentage fees — a percentage of the amount you send (e.g., 1.5%)
- FX markup — their profit margin on the exchange rate
These fees can change without notice. Always ask the provider for a final quote that includes all fees before you send.
What "Rates as of [date]" Means
When BantayPadala shows "Rates as of March 15, 2026 at 3:42 PM," that timestamp tells you when we last verified our data. It does NOT mean those rates are still accurate right now.
Think of it like the date on fresh milk at a grocery store — it tells you when it was packaged, not that it's still fresh today. The fresher the data, the more reliable it is, but market data ages quickly.
Why Rates Sometimes Drop (and Sometimes Rise)
If the Philippine Peso gets stronger, the amount your family receives goes up (good news!). If it gets weaker, the amount goes down (tough luck). This is global currency markets at work, and it's completely outside our control.
Also, providers may change their markups based on:
- How much demand they have
- Competition from other providers
- Market conditions
- Promotions they're running
Our job is to show you the current rates. The market's job is to keep moving.
When You Should Double-Check
Always verify rates directly with the provider if:
- You're sending a large amount of money
- You're using a payment method we don't show (wire transfer, ACH, cash pickup, etc.)
- You're in a less common location or country
- Market volatility is high (big news in global finance that day)
- It's been several hours since you checked BantayPadala
We Don't Favor Any Provider
BantayPadala ranks providers by the best rate for you first — always. Even though we earn affiliate commissions, those commissions are the same no matter which provider you choose. So we have absolutely no incentive to rank anyone higher than their rates deserve.
Rate Locked In or Not?
Most remittance providers do NOT lock in rates. This means:
- If you start a transfer and don't finish it, the rate might change before you complete it.
- The rate you see while entering recipient details may not be the rate you get at the final step.
- Some providers let you lock in a rate for a limited time (a few minutes to a few hours). Check their site for details.
If a locked-in rate matters to you, ask the provider directly how long they hold rates before processing.
Special Situations
Our rates might not apply if:
- You're sending cash in person (some providers give better rates for cash)
- You're using a promotional or promo code
- You're a new customer (new customer rates can differ)
- You're sending to a bank account vs. a cash pickup point
- You're sending to remote areas with limited access
Always mention these details when asking a provider for your personal quote.
Still Have Questions?
This disclaimer covers the big picture. But you might have specific questions about how rates work for your situation. Here's what we recommend:
- For rate questions: Contact the provider directly. They handle the actual rates and can give you the most accurate quote.
- For BantayPadala questions: Email us at hello@bantaypadala.com. We'll explain anything that's not clear.
The Bottom Line
BantayPadala gives you the best rate information we can provide. But we can't predict the future or control global markets. So always verify with the provider, always read the fine print, and never send money based on an estimate alone.
Your money is too important to guess with. A 2-minute call or quick login to confirm rates can save you thousands of pesos.
